Cinco De Mayo

In the United States Cinco de Mayo has become a commemoration of Mexican culture and heritage, particularly in areas with large Mexican/ Hispanic populations.

Come watch the parade. The colors of the Mexican flag (red, white, and green) often appear in costumes and party decorations. People decorate for Cinco de Mayo with balloons, streamers, and flowers. Mariachi bands or other Mexican folk music is also played at these celebrations and there is often traditional Mexican dancing.

A mariachi band is a popular style ofMexican folk music that consists of violin, guitar, trumpet, and vihuela instrumentalists. In fact the word “mariachi” comes from the French for marriage, “mariage.”
Enjoy rides like the ferris wheels, bumper cars, carousel, the hurricane, many more.

Watch the beautiful sparks in the sky at night. Think about some movement verbs, coll, jet, spin, spiral, whirl, whisk, burst, spurt, shoot, spatter, splatter, spurt, gush, rain, spray, scatter, dart, whizz, zoom, float, flitter – and their light quality – dazzling, blazing, shimmering, glittering, sparkling, glowing, glimmering, twinkling.

History

Many people outside Mexico mistakenly believe that Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of Mexican independence, which was declared more than 50 years before the Battle of Puebla.Independence Day in Mexico (Día de la Independencia) is commemorated on September 16.

Today, revelers mark the occasion with parades, parties, mariachi music, Mexican folk dancing and traditional foods such as tacos and mole poblano. Some of the largest festivals are held in Los Angeles, Chicago and Houston.
